Today's theme: OILY SKIN

We are all about the "gleaux" up here at Gleaux Fresh Skin and glowing skin is all the rage. But when you have oily skin, sometimes you wish you didn't glow that much.

Don't stress we can help you deal with oily skin. Quick tips on what causes it, the best ingredients to combat and aid oily skin, the ingredients you should definitely avoid, and which products you should use for the ultimate skin care routine for oily skin.

Why do some people get oily skin?

Oily skin occurs when your skin produces too much sebum, which is meant to moisturize and protect your skin. Excess oil production is mostly genetic, but can also be caused by stress, hormonal changes, and environmental stressors. But there is a plus to having oily skin: your sebum helps to preserve your skin. Sebum keeps your skin looking young, and those with oily skin tend to also have thicker skin and fewer wrinkles.

The Best Ingredients for Your Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, look for products with the following main or active ingredients:

Rose Oil - Cleanses the skin, minimizes pores, and naturally hydrates.
Clary Sage -
Acts as a natural toner and helps balance the skin.

Tea Tree Oil - Helps cleanse dirt & oil from pores.
Hyaluronic Acid - Helps to balance moisture in your skin, super hydrating.
Retinol - (AKA vitamin A) firms your skin and builds collagen

Squalane - Helps to balance your skin’s natural oils.
Rosemary Extract - Helps to naturally cleanse and purify your pores.
Aloe Vera - Helps to remove any buildup while adding moisture to your skin.

The Worst (well kinda) Ingredients for Your Oily Skin

Coconut Oil-a pore clogging oil. works great for removing makeup BEFORE cleansing your skin with your usual wash, but should never be left on the skin if you have oily skin.

Petroleum jelly, lanolins and mineral oils - while these can be super hydrating they create barriers on your skin that will clog pores, causing an overproduction of sebum.

Rough, face scrubs-over exfoliation with harsh granules, can damage the moisture barrier and when skin is dried out it creates more sebum to compensate.

Best Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

Treating your oily skin all comes down to your skincare routine. Here's our suggested morning and evening skin care routines for oily skin:

Start Your Day

Cleanser.

It’s important to wash your face twice a day. Skin continues to produce oil even while you sleep, so regardless if you wash your face before bed, you need to wash it again.

Product Suggestion:

Safflower & Sage Milk Cleanser,  the clary sage oil helps to soothe inflamed skin, while the safflower seed oil helps to balance sebum levels

Exfoliate (1-3 times per week).

Gently exfoliating can help remove dead skin cells and give your skin a deeper cleanse. However, over exfoliating can strip your skin of its natural oils which in turn would cause an increase in sebum production: the opposite of what you want. So, it’s important to only exfoliate 1-3 times a week based on your own individual skin type.

Product Suggestion:

Turmeric & Hemp Cleansing Scrub,  the clary sage oil helps to soothe inflamed skin, while the safflower seed oil helps to balance sebum levels

Tone.

Toner helps prep your skin for the rest of your routine so that your other products are more effective. A good natural toner will hydrate your skin while cleansing and minimizing the look of pores.

Product Suggestion:

Rose Pom Green Tea Toner,  the clary sage oil helps to soothe inflamed skin, while the witch hazel protects against skin damage and reduces irritation.

Serum

Oily skin can result in uneven skin tone and texture. Improving your skin’s texture and tone is one of the many benefits of a good serum.

Product Suggestion:

Gleaux Serum, hydrating vitamin-c infused hyaluronic acid serum.

Moisturizer

Adding moisture to your skin will keep your skin from thinking it's dry, helping to balance your oils. Remember, moisturizing restores oil to your skin, while hydrating restores water to your skin. With oily skin, you still need to keep your skin well hydrated, sticking to lighter facial lotions or creams are generally best.

Product Suggestion:

Aloe Gleaux Gel Creme, a water-based gel creme, that is lightweight and absorbs quickly, so your face doesn’t feel greasy afterwards and includes oil absorbing ingredients

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is an important step for all skin types. Sun exposure can actually dry out your skin, lead to accelerated signs of aging, and cause major skin damage. It's best to use a mineral based sunscreen, that include Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, or both.

Product Suggestion:

Bare Republic’s Mineral SPF 30 Face Sunscreen Gel-Lotion is lightweight and oil free, making it ideal sun protection for oily skin.

Prepare for Bed.

Cleanser.

After all day sweating and exposing your skin to environmental stressors, it’s pivotal to wash your face. If you wear makeup, it’s even more important to make sure you remove your makeup before you go to bed.

Product Suggestion:

Liquid African Black Soap Cleaner,  great at removing impuprities, bacteria and makeup without stripping the skin and causing over compensation of sebum production.

Mask (1-3 times per week).

Using a mask 1-3 times a week will give your skin a deep cleansing , ridding it of excess oils and other impurities. A mask can also help to improve your skin’s overrall texture.

Product Suggestion:

Spotless: CBD Sheet Masks, CBD anti-blemish sheet MASK may return oily skin to a calmer, clearer state. Manuka Honey Extract, revered for its naturally occurring antibacterial properties, assists to gently combat breakouts as it delivers hydration to ease irritation.

Tone.

Using a toner again at night will help to cleanse your skin from the day’s exposure to environmental stressors and it will prep it for the rest of your nightly routine.

Bleue Fresh Oil, a water-based oil/serum that combines the moisturizing power of squalane with skin healing herbs

Moisturizer

We know, repetitive! You should moisturize your face after you cleanse, everytime, even if you do have oily skin. For most people with oily skin, night creams can be too heavy; so if you want to use a night cream, look for those that are focused on restoring water to your skin.

Product Suggestion:

Aloe Gleaux Gel Creme, a water-based gel creme, that is lightweight and absorbs quickly, so your face doesn’t feel greasy afterwards and includes oil absorbing ingredients

There are other things you can do outside of your AM and PM routines to help combat oily skin:

  • Use a refreshing toner throughout the day.
  • Be sure to wash your face after you go to the gym and follow up your cleanse with a moisturizer.
  • Absolutely don’t touch your face! - Your hands and fingers touch everything, and touching your face will spread the germs and bacteria from your hands to your skin and get in your pores.
